The Menstrual Hygiene sensitisation project was designed to promote awareness and understanding of proper menstrual health management among women and girls, particularly in rural communities where access to accurate information and essential sanitary materials remains limited. The initiative aimed to address the stigma surrounding menstruation and to educate participants on best practices in the use, care, and disposal of menstrual products, including both disposable and reusable pads.
Through a series of interactive sessions, community outreach programmes, and group discussions, participants were taught the importance of maintaining personal hygiene during menstruation. Practical demonstrations were conducted on how to use sanitary pads safely, the correct way to change them, and how to dispose of them responsibly to protect the environment. Special attention was also given to reusable pads, with instructions on how to wash, dry, and store them hygienically to prevent infections and prolong their lifespan.
In addition to the educational component, free sanitary pads were distributed to women and girls who often struggle to afford them. This gesture not only provided immediate relief but also encouraged open conversations about menstrual health, reducing the shame and secrecy that often surround the topic. Community leaders and mothers were also involved to help sustain the message and ensure that the knowledge gained would be shared more widely.
Project Outcome
The project significantly improved menstrual health awareness and practices among the participants. Many women reported increased confidence in managing their menstrual hygiene and a better understanding of how to care for themselves during their cycles. The distribution of free pads alleviated short-term financial strain for many families, while the sensitisation sessions helped dismantle cultural myths and taboos. Overall, the initiative fostered dignity, health, and empowerment for women and girls in the participating communities.
